By GINIA BELLAFANTE

In a just world, a celebrated rock personality would
embark on a plane and fall in love with the shy, unglamorous
geriatric nurse seated next to him. But when U2 bassist ADAM
CLAYTON flew from New York City to Los Angeles for the Grammy
Awards last winter, his destiny took a different shape_a lanky,
exotic one. His cabinmate? Supermodel NAOMI CAMPBELL, of course.
As the crazy vagaries of fate would have it, Clayton had always
had a mad crush on the sometime girlfriend of Robert De Niro.
What luck! The beautiful Brit took warmly to the bespectacled
Irishman, even though she was en route to a big date with more
readily recognizable musicmaker Eric Clapton. A few months later
and Campbell is sporting a dazzling antique diamond ring. She
announced their engagement on the Irish talk show Kenny Live
last week. No word yet on a wedding date. Isn't it comforting
to know that fairy tales still happen?
